Understanding menstrual cycle: by Dr. Chuka Amukamara

At the end of discussion, you will understand:

1. The mechanism of menstrual cycle

2. Understand your own cycle/your babe's

3. When to say Fruitful and safe period

4. Causes of missed period

5. Causes of irregular cycle

6. Other knowledge that will come from questions

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°

The human menstrual cycle or menstruation is a regular event that takes place in the life of every FRUITFUL woman.

So if your babe is seeing her period, you should tell her CONGRATULATIONS, for remaining fruitful

Just as woman was created to aid in the multiplication of the world, nature prepares her for pregnancy every month, such that she has at least one ripe egg that drops for fertilization.

The menstrual cycle is required for the production of egg cells, and for the preparation of the womb for pregnancy. It occurs due to the rise and fall of estrogen (female sex hormone)

The menstrual cycle is complex and controlled by many different glands and the hormones that these glands produce.

It has four phases which are:

◾menstruation - clearing of the womb

◾follicular phase - egg preparation for ovulation

◾ovulation - release of egg for Fertilization

◾luteal phase -preparation of womb for pregnancy

Menstrual cycle is characterized by:

1. Discharge of menses (period) which begins on the first day of the cycle and ends in about 5 days.

2. The discharge is an indication of a sloughing of thickened womb walls

3. Growth and maturing of an egg from egg follicles, which drops from the ovary to area of Fertilization on your ovulation day

4. Thickening of the lining of the womb, in readiness for pregnancy

5. Others: cramps, increased sexual urge etc.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR OWN CYCLE:

Girlfriends and boyfriends (or couples) should jointly understand her cycle for them to know when to and when not to have intercourse, depending on their GOALS.

Every lady is unique in her cycle.

During counseling, especially when a girl reported of a missing period, I found out that a lot of ladies do not understand the difference between menstrual cycle and menstruation.

When I ask, "how many days is your cycle?

I usually get different responses like 3days, 5days,

Some will even say "sometimes 5, sometimes 4".

Dear Lady, if you cannot comfortably answer the above question, kindly pay more attention to this lecture. Because, it is your duty to educate your man about your cycle, before he learns and joins in observing the changes with you as they occur.

A lady's menstrual cycle or her cycle begins to count from the first day of her period (day she sees her menses) to a day before her next period.

The average number is 28 to 29 days, but it can vary for different ladies and between cycles. It can be 30 days,

Hope you can be able to count yours and know?

If your period came on the 4th of July, and the next month's came on the 1st of August, your cycle is

4th July to 1st August, which is 28 days.

You can simply count this difference using a calendar

We hear about fruitful period and safe period

To understand these, and apply the different seasons in a woman's cycle, one need to carefully understand the cycle

FRUITFUL period is that time in your cycle, when pregnancy is likely going to happen from an intercourse - it usually occurs around your ovulation.

When you're able to count and note your ovulation day, you can easily count your fruitful period.

Usually, the sperm spends 72 hours alive when released, and this means that if it is introduced 3 days before ovulation, it can comfortably wait and fertilize the egg released on ovulation day.

Again, the egg when dropped can also spend up to 48 hours awaiting Fertilization before it dies off, this means that two days ahead of ovulation, the released egg is still alive

Three days before 14th day and two days after 14th day.

Some persons to rule out uncertainties say "three days before 14th day and 3 days after 14th day"

Is that clear?

So, it is already a duty to note the 14th day of every cycle and cramm the date

SAFE PERIOD: Time when pregnancy is not likely to occur, any other time outside the carved out days above

But, there are exceptions

Certain factors can cause a missed period or altered period

1. Infection

2. Hormonal imbalance - remember, the body of a woman is purely hormone-controlled

3. Stress

4. Absence of ovulation

5. Drugs

6. Etc

Certain infections, especially sexually transmitted infections may not be symptomatic but can cause unnoticed damages

Chlamydia infection

Gonorrhoea

Syphilis.

Frequent use of hormone drugs

Postinor, postpil, restinor (levonorgesterel)

Steriods and hormone mimicking drugs, doping drugs can cause changes in the hormone complementarity and cause missed period

Stress leads to the release of certain hormones and neurotransmitters including cortisol, that affect the balance of other essential hormones necessary for the repeated cycle

Since they share chemical precursors

Absence of ovulation, due to anatomical factors, blockages and chronic infection or recurrent infections

One day, a lady came to ask me "Pharm, what drug will make my menses not to come out

And I asked her, why won't you want your menses to come out,

She said. Eeerm, "I am traveling", I don't want it to embarrass me

Another one came asking for "drugs that will increase her breast size

The other asked for drugs that will increase her bumbum

All these drugs exist, but not without effects on the authentic chemical network of your body

So once they are used or tried, the natural pathway is altered

Some of the drugs used to increase breast size work by increasing PROLACTIN levels,

Thereby causing a shot down or depression of estrogen synthesis

Absence of estrogen marks the end of a woman's fertile life

That's why at menopause, the estrogen levels are too low

And then, a lot of symptoms of menopause ensue use of these drugs

The one that boost bumbum

Mostly work by redirecting the sensitivity of estrogen receptors, to a particular area of interest "adipocytes" bumbum cells, while affecting the events in other areas.

Then, finally

ABORTION

There are real Abortifacients and pseudo or placebo ones

How many persons here have used AMPICLOX after having unprotected sex?

A lady very fine and seemingly educated lady came to the pharmacy today to buy

AMPICLOX 1card and postinor 2

When I asked her, why the ampiclox,

She said "for washing and resetting"

My cousin has a sachet of ampiclox,

After every gbese, he takes one capsule

When I asked, he says "for washing and setting"

Other category of persons claim that it prevents pregnancy.

Who here has used ANDREW LIVER SALT after sex?

The dangerous thing about the use of AMPICLOX unnecessarily is that when you will need if, it will not work again

A lot of ladies say that Andrews prevent pregnancy for them.

There are no level of stuffs people have not tried in the name of trying to commit abortion.

I have a patient, who is currently battling with an infection, Staph aureus.

Staph in her body resistant to all antibiotics except Meropenem

Meropenem a vial is ₦17,000

And sister will need 14 vials

So in conclusion, before we enter into question and answer...

TO AVOID ABORTION, and use of postpill

Please, understand her cycle.

 Thanks for your attention!!!

Questions and answers segment!!!

The continuous intake of pain relief drugs during menstruation does it in any way affect the lady

Dr: Chuka:

The very common ones

Diclofenac, piroxicam, meloxicam,

They are all painkillers, while they also express some levels of blood thinning activities.

The only known side effects is the corrosion of stomach walls, when taken in excess.

Aside that, they are safe.

The platelet inhibition which is a secondary side effects is also not significant,

Dr: Chuka:

We used to know of buscopan which contains hyoscine N-butyl bromide is a good antispasmodics that reduces cramps,

Some persons do not feel cramps, rather they feel pain,

To such persons, simple painkillef helps,

Felvin, meloxicam or even paracetamol

Questions!!!

How is PID gotten? Through unprotected sex or Using the toilet of an infected person and And how does one tackle it finally?

what role fibroids play in abortions?

Is it true that sperm actually turns to blood after 72 hours?

Dr. Chuka:

PID-pelvic inflammatory disease - inflammation of the walls of the pelvis, pouches of Douglas, which is mostly caused by chronic presence of bacteria, fungal and viruse, even protozoa, but most common causes is bacteria.

PID happens when an infection is poorly treated, such that the offending organism finds its way up the channel up to the cervix, to fallopian and ovary likely....

The infection can be gotten through sex, untreated infections caused by organism from the use of public toilet if not addressed can also get into the canal and cause symptoms.

Most common causes: chlamydia, gonorrhoea, which are mostly sexually ttabsimitted

FIBROID plays role in MISCARRIAGE, let's put it that way not abortion.... The body sometime sees fibroid as pregnancy and sometimes as a defect, and when this happens, it begins to affect which hormone is released. Remember:   pregnancy is supprted by progesterone, when the body sees it as a defect, there is inflammation and general body hotness which often times lead to miscarriage

Sperm is a composition of chemical compounds including: lecithin, fructose, and proteins which can be broken down into separate components - not blood.

Questions!!!!

4: How does someone knows she's having yeast infection.

Dr. Chuka:

1: Your cycle can be as much as 30 days, but if begins to delay, to take up to 35 days, and then back to 30 days, there might be some somewhat insignificant factors, probably hormone changes, because you only begin to count when it finally comes... I will recommend you get "evening primrose oil, take and see if it helps you, If it persists, kindly see a gynaecologist

2. When your previous period didn't empty completely, you're likely going to see blood clot in your next period, it is normal

3. I will need to know which drugs they were, and some other information, kindly chat me in private after the class.

4: What people describe as Yeast infection caused by candida albican, is a symptom of breakdown of the integrity of the vagina giving rise to increase fungal activities - it comes with itching, whitish discharge that's usually think.

Questions!!!!

1: How can one accurately calculate ovulation date because I don’t know how to calculate mine it’s my app that does that for me and I notice sometimes the ovulation day varies.?

2: For the unprotected sex mistakes could happen since contraceptives is not really advisable can one still take it once in a while when such mistakes happen.?

3: You said something about the use of drugs could delay menses for instance taking all those drugs for flat tummy does it in anyway affect the cycle?

Dr. Chuka:

1. Relying on your phone app will sometime give you wrong result.

I remember when, during my nysc, one babe I was dating said she's pregnant "because her phone app said so", but I told her, well, you're not pregnant, because I know her cycle, and even understood it more than her, after 6 days, her period came forth.

Try, and read the earlier part of the lecture,  if its still not clear, hit me up in private, I will guide further.

2: Once in a while, fine, because they are called EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVES to be used during emergency, or accidental events,

Levonorgesterel must not be used more than once in two consecutive months, to enable the body get over the effects

3: If I know the particular drugs, their names, I would be able to guide. But I know that most of the stuffs people use for flat tummy are not hormonal, so they are not supposed to affect the cycle, unless if they are of plant extracts, which the chemical compositions are not defined

Question!!

What causes brownish color of blood during menstruation and what is the possible solution

Why women don't reach orgasm as often as d men do. Women fake it o!

Dr. Chuka:

Blood when exposed to air overtime turns tarry-red, like I said, sometimes your period may not empty completely, during next period, you begin to see traces of brown looking blood, especially for ladies that are not really sexually active.

OK.

LADIES DO NOT REACH ORGASM as quick as men, because just as the penis is on the surface and easily stimulated to satisfaction, the woman's vaginal walls and the clitoris are located in the inside and require more CONTACT TIME with the stimulating agent.

Again, psychologically, a woman's body should be sexually aware before penetration,

Wetness is a step to her body's sexual awareness not the whole. !!!!
