Journey to June 12: Our Haunting Past
Exactly 23 years ago, Nigerians went to the polls on this day to elect a leader, a day that has been regarded in our political history as 'the greatest'. Legs trotted, heads stood high under the sun and the elderly and disabled clutched their legs to democratise Nigeria after years of military rule. THE country was expectant, the nation was awaiting, international community was monitoring and while the collation was on, the untold happened, the Maradona roared in his den, and our political history veered off, Banbangida in a nation wide broadcast on June 26 cited acts of irregularities and unfairness and the annulled the election (lol). The courage of Abiola is unparalleled, He was dogged his wife was the back bone. She was a direct opposite of what we have today as first ladies. Pundits have opined that without her death Abiola would not have died. Abiola is the definition of a leader. One who cults followershio even when not in power. He was a business man but welded so much influence in the political arena. What more, democracy in nigeria started from June 12. Democracy day should celebrate the struggle of Nigerians and thousands that died. Nothing worthy distinguishes may 29 compared to June 12 . Abiola was our president, the greatest thing that never happened to our history.
