Altitude of Uniben students politicians: by Apollinaris Akpejiori

Hello Great Minds!

There's something that has been bothering me since i gained admission into the Great University Of Benin and it keeps re-occuring, it is the ATTITUDE OF SCHOOL POLITICIANS. When i came for clearance as a fresher, i didn't have any idea of school politics, i saw different welcome back to school posters with names boldly written beneath them, i felt loved. The one that amazed me so much was when i recieved welcome back to school and inspirational quotes through sms, come to think of it, where did they get my number from? I felt like a king, and i said to myself, "this school is the best". After some months into the semester, my class rep announced to the class that someone wants to address us, when the person came and gave his name, i was surprised because he is the same person that has been sending me sms. Suddenly he spoilt the whole uniben dream by saying "i am coming out for...........please vote for me", at this moment i was furious and i said to myself "so this guy has been doing all these things because he wanted our votes". And when i looked at the whole school, i saw more political publicity than actual projects carried out by these so-called politicians. When it was getting to exams period, they shared past questions with their names boldly written on them. And i kept wondering "can't students do good things for their fellow students without attaching politics to it?". Time has passed and i am no longer a fresher, i have attended so many political meetings i have participated in some elections, but the fact still remains that nobody does any good thing in uniben without coming out for a political position. They want their names to be heard, they want to be famous, they want to loot our dues, they want us to feel that they are representing us instead they are representing themselves. The most amazing part of it is that, they dont graudate with fantastic grades, they can decieve us but cannot decieve their intellectual capability. When i go through school social networking platforms these days, i see messages carrying names beneath them and i already know their purpose. Please let us have a re-think, school politics is one of the best that has happened to students, it gives a sense of belonging. Let us not spoil it with our attitude, we are so predictable, let us change the way we play our politics and concentrate more on impacting on human lives other selling our names. We are intellectuals, we can do whatever we set our hearts to do. I just want to make common sense! It's me Admin Solo! I have spoken!

@ appollinaris...all uve said is true...one cannot but wonder why the acts of altruism that are shown by student politicians during election periods only resurface at times when our votes are needed.

It baffles me that the only time they deem it fit to show little acts of philanthropy is when our franchise is needed.

It makes me beg the question... Do we really have up and coming philanthropists in Nigeria today? Because sincerely... The greatest number of persons who play politics in Nigeria... More often than not, started when they where in the university...and if the only reason they see it wise to show some love is in the quest to fulfill their political ambition,it gives me no other option that to believe that the *philanthropy* mantra in its totality is heading for a pestilential aqua.

People need to wisen up and see that often times, those who spend the most during electioneering campaigns... Have so much to lose... They are overzealous and overly officious

whenever they check their account balance and see how much money they've spent just so they could win..they increase the tempo with which they campaign... Simply put, they are position driven... Because at the end of the day when they eventually get into office, their very first agenda is recovering the money they've used to campaign...like it or not.

Have u ever wondered why in Nigeria today people view politics as a do or die affair? It wasn't supposed to be that way,if ure vying for a political position, you should be receptive to competition because any person who  decided to vy for a position should have something to offer...let everyone campaign peacefully without spreading negative propaganda against d opposition as is seen in Nigerian politics today.

Sorry I digressed a little

Cyril Iyanu: Was just bearing my mind sha

 Cyril Iyanu:

Also that part where u stated that often times the money spent on political publicity is much More than that spent on actual projects,I really can't contribute to that...cause some projects carried out in school cost a fortune...so I choose to disagree on that 1
