I LEARNT: by Caleb E. Timeyim

*I LEARNT...*

I learnt persistence from my dad. I grew up to know him as a man of few profound words. He didn't speak much but his actions spoke a great deal. He'll look at something that looks quite impossible and he'll simply say "I'll get back to you son." There was almost never a night when he didn't spend some time studying in reckless abandon. He taught me "CANEI" Continous And Never Ending Improvement.

I learnt dedication from my boss. Whenever I was around him he could spend the whole day talking about the latest production software, or the newest sound card, or the best voice tweak. He was a music production guru whose dedication I greatly admired. He'll always start with the words "Caleb have you heard..." And would always end with something mind blowing .

When I tried to setup a bookshop, I learnt how to cherish little beginnings.  Sometimes we all have the propensity to dream big but yet we despise the virtue of starting small. We forget that all great business men and women started from little and grew their franchise with passion, burning desire and out of a sheer determination to succeed.

When I lost my chance to travel abroad, I learnt the value of starting where we are. Sometimes we feel our success is located somewhere else than our present location. We forget that true success lies inward first before it grows outwards. Anyone can succeed exactly where they are if only we can maximize the little we have.

When I fell ill a day to CHM124, I learnt the value of compounding. Life would be much easier if we did a little consistently than if did so much at once. Success indeed is not an event but a process and great men do consistently what average men do occasionally.

When I almost lost my mum to asthma, I learnt the value of living in the moment. We constantly think about the future that we forget to cherish the gift of today. The best time to love is right now, not tomorrow or next week, but now. Someone once said "...today is a gift, that's why it's called present."

When I was placed to lead a group of teenagers in secondary school, I learnt the danger of indecision. Most times we hate to be decisive because we don't like to fail. We forget that failure is a gift and that when we fail,  we actually learn what not to do. Almost all great people in history have failed miserably but they learnt the lesson in their failures. Someone once said that a bad decision made early is better than a good decision made late.

When I got "heartbroken" I learnt the virtue of valuing what we have. Often we wait until we loose something precious before we understand the importance they hold. When we value what we have no matter how little, we become much more content than self-centered, and life becomes more fulfilling.

For in all circumstances life placed me in, whether by time or chance, I learnt something new however little or insignificant it was.

Even now as i write, I've learnt.

For when a man stops learning, he dies.
