On fighting crime and corruption, education is the key: by Davi'O R Seki
On fighting Crime and corruption, education is the key.
By education, I do not mean earning a university degree of some sorts. I mean teaching people about each other, their environment and the need to understand one another for better interaction...
People are keen to blaming poverty to be the cause of rise in the rate of crime all-over the world, but they fail to realize that the biggest criminal cases that eventually hurt a larger part of the population are committed by the rich and powerful in the society. People do not steal because they are poor and needy, they steal because they don't know how else to provide for themselves and they have no idea the effect of their sins on the person they commit the crime against.
Education, however, in this sense goes beyond teaching and learning science, art and their theories and practical approaches. It is about teaching humans about the importance of being human, understanding each other's flaws and being humane towards one another and the earth. If children were made to understand that loving is important and forgiveness is necessary in human relationship, they will not commit a crime against another person, neither would they willingly harm the earth.
I am not trying to elude the fact that we need God to restore human peace in general, but basically, humans are the ones who should move towards restoring humanity in an era where terrorism, organized crime and inhumane practices are the order of the day, and religion is the biggest fuel of these vices; as some people destroy lives and properties in the name of Islam, and Christians fold their hands and do nothing because they believe these are the signs of the end time and there's nothing anyone can do to stop it. Christians now build mighty churches and embark on major church projects, while they forget the many poor and hungry people who they need to provide for. Even the philanthropist and Charity givers now give for show...
Humans have forgotten how to give. That giving is about love and long lasting compassion for whoever is receiving. That giving is an attempt to lift someone above the level they are in. That giving is a fruit of love and not of pity. That giving is a lifestyle and not a program or obligation that should be fulfilled on yearly basis. There is another form of giving which is found amongst friends and involves sharing the little they have amongst themselves. This would reduce the tendency to cheat a friend, as friends who share more tend to be happier with each other.
Education on the basic tenets of humanity would have us go from where we are to a happier and glorious human society. If, perhaps, this education can be taken to people of all age group, tribe and/or religion no one would comfortably sin against his/her neighbor... Even if they do, by mistake, they would repent of it, out of love and not out of the compulsion of religious laws.
