POIGNANT POLITICS: by CYRIL IYANU
*POIGNANT POLITICS*
it's a very cold morning, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed nevertheless I pick up my phone to check the time it's 5:30am,without much hesitation I then proceed to pick up my pen and notebook and I begin to write...there's not much I can do anyway...I believe that the ambience of serenity that pervades my bedroom provides an ample condition for writing.
It's the Edo state gubernatorial elections period and just last night here I had dedicated about 2hours of my time to listen to the APC's political campaign train which seemed like it was being spearheaded by the present governor of Edo state.
In all sincerity,I still don't really know who is actually contesting for the office of Governor of Edo state... Whether its the flag bearer in the person of Godwin obaseki whose face I see on the posters or its the incumbent comrade governor for a 3rd term.
I listened attentively as the comrade governor campaigned for his party flag bearer using the projects he had completed in his first tenure in office. No doubts he has done a lot in the area of infrastructure; he built schools,no doubts;a hospital, no doubts;constructed roads,no doubts all these are indubitable.
After he was done talking, he proceeded to tell the teeming crowd about some of his uncompleted projects which he believed his successor *IF* elected into office would complete.
Now this sparked me off in a way because any commonsensical intellectual on hearing that should invariably insinuate 2 things.
1. The comrade governor accepts that all the things he promised he'd do in his first tenure in office he couldn't complete in almost 2 terms
2. He has undermined our intelligence and powers of discretion by using a platform that was supposed to serve the sole purpose of campaigning to idolize himself by asserting that no other governor has done as much as he has while in office
Now from the first insinuation,it only seems reasonable if I say that his tenure in office wasn't successful judging from the fact that there is still so much work to do that should have been done already... Any well meaning leader who understands that true leadership is servitude would have his tail between his feet when talking to his people knowing fully well that he didn't deliver their mandate in totality and wouldn't have the Right to speak badly of previous administrations whether they performed poorly or not when he is not an exception to the conventional practice
Secondly, he began to dash out all forms of slanderous accusations against the person of pastor osagie ize iyamu...which I never expected from the comrade governor, one I used to hold in such high esteem because of his intellectuality.
He proceeded to acquaint the crowd with the ugly past life he believed osagie ize iyamu had led behind him..of how he was rusticated in his 2nd year in the university and was prevented from being called to bar because he allegedly mutilated a young Mans' body with acid and rendered him impotent in the process.
Be it true or not, that is not my concern. My main concern is,if someone of the person of the *comrade* governor can indulge in defamatory campaign against an opponent(his successors by the way),then where exactly is Nigeria headed politically speaking?
I felt really bad after watching that telecast and that feeling prompted me to write this article.
It makes me beg the question: what message is being sent to the youths of today? The leaders of tomorrow... And how exactly will they not see politics as a dirty game when it is exactly what is being portrayed before them.
Politicians of the no distant future need to realise that politics is not a do or die affair, sincerely speaking if the comrade governor can resort to the use of calumny,it only speaks magnitude of the height of desperation their politics has gotten to. You don't need to defame your opponent to make yourself look good or to win in an election that's dirty politics and it is wrong in all ramifications... It only communicates to people that you are power thirsty and/or position driven.
Also it pains me that such public display of diablerie is being tolerated by the public and nothing is being done to curb it.politicians should learn to keep their dirty secrets to themselves and refrain from washing their dirty linen in public as it is very embarrassing and speaks low of Nigeria as a country in the eyes of the global community.
I also noticed that for the almost 2hrs telecast, less than 30 mins was spent in *actual campaign* the aspirant took less than 10mins to tell the public what he would do if elected into office and never bothered to acquaint the people on how he planned on doing it...also I watched to see if maybe by any means an opportunity would be created for the people to ask questions on how he intended on bringing the blueprints to fruition if elected into office...my brothers and sisters, such a platform was never created.
*If* eventually such an aspirant is elected into office and *probably* fails to perform who are we to hold responsible? Is it the aspirant? In all sincerity *NO*...he barely made promises and as such it's not even a matter of him failing to keep them. Rather, we are to be held responsible because we were the ones who put him there
We abetted his Ascension... *IF* he begins to loot public funds,we should realise that we gave him the keys to the state treasury.(now I am not in any way saying that the person of Godwin obaseki is a fraudulent one, don't get me wrong...I am only making instances)
And neither am I implying that the person of osagie ize iyamu is that of a saint either... And also I am no supporter of the PDP by the way...I am only inclined (sorta a propensity)to write when I see wrong things being done and I feel something must be said about it.
Now to the up and coming politicians ...never engage in negative campaign it undermines your integrity and gives people less reasons why they should respect you. Instead tell them what you plan to do if given the opportunity to serve and how you plan on going about it
Also to the already existing politicians,in the words of Darry Hartley Leonard you need to understand that "when a person takes up a position of authority, he gives up the right to abuse people*
And just before I draw the curtains, also learn to be receptive to competition.. It gives you an opportunity to prove your worth.
I hope you learn... Have a nice day and don't forget to...
PONDER UPON THIS WORDS
To the leaders of tomorrow I say *prochnost*
The Nigeria we seek is within our grasp
