How the Brain works and how Big Brother Naija is killing it...
The human brain is the most intelligent known object in our physical universe. It is through it that we all (Humans) have the ability to conceive thoughts and develop on ideas. The brain receives sensory information through the senses, and processes them where necessary. Thoughts are processed in the cerebral cortex (the part of the brain that actually thinks) and they are often instigated by what comes from the auditory and optic organs (ears and eyes).
Now here's how the brain works. The brain stores [any] information, whether useful or not and this helps it to process thoughts in the future; for example, the first time you perceived the smell of an orange you knew that that was how Oranges smell, the next time you perceived the smell of orange juice, you first knew for sure it originated from orange(s). The same is done with pictures and words. The very first time you heard the word "Cow", you had a picture to guide you on how cows looked like, so when next you heard someone said cow, you thought of that image, or when next you saw a cow or anything that looked like it, you simply called it cow. If care is not taken, what's not needed can also be easily passed into the brain and overtime become an habit — a bad one...
Now, the brain grows, and the rate at which it does and extent, depends largely upon what goes into the it. The brain likes to be aroused. It likes to go deeper into things and not just shallow knowledge. But if it it's fed with shallow knowledge, it will become lazy overtime and always dwell on shallow thinking. For example, pictures and processes are stored in the cerebral cortex as mentioned earlier, and whenever a person reads words, the brain is aroused and brings these words into images which may or may not be displayed in form of a drama and this is called imagination. Constantly reading books that psych up one's imaginative abilities will increase one's ability to tink deep and imagine, and this becomes an habit... As such, readers love reading because it helps them to imagine and takes them to a world where things might be somewhat perfect. Although, some persons do not need to read to imagine - the daydreamers. They are naturally curious and they have developed an early ability to wonder, this would, however lead them in the future to become good readers... They read to get knowledge and keep reading, not because they like to read, but because it's the only way to satisfy their curiosity — plus, they experiment; they become scientists, E.g Albert Einstein.
What you read or see defines who you'll be and how you'll handle news and events. For example, a person who has studied history very well (not just within the four walls of school) is not seen to be shocked by the events or talks of the day. By the time everyone is in panic that something new has happened and the world is coming to an end, they are often reminded of the past events recorded in history that have triggered the people of that era to think in the same way. So they remain calm knowing it would just pass. A person who has studied science of neurotransmitters in a deeper sense would less likely be moved by feelings because for everything they feel, whether love or hate, they have a biochemical explanation for and they know it would pass; many of them already know how to not trigger feelings and hold themselves. A person who is grounded in knowledge, will not act like they know everything... Because they know that the more they know, the more they realise that they know less and there is just much more to know.
Anything, generally, that increases the ability to think, increases the brain function. This could span from science to artistry, to humanities, to music, to philosophy and history, religion, adventure and so on and so forth. Technically, the more the brains does something, the more of it it wants. This is in line with the theory that the longer something stays, the greater it's tendency to stay even longer... So, the more you think, the more thinking becomes an habit. The more you read, the more reading becomes an habit, the more you adventure, the more it becomes an habit. Anything you do more, becomes an habit... You can train your brain, by doing something more and making it turn into an habit. This is the reason, I think, we have introverts and extroverts. Introverts have stayed with themselves more times than they have hung out with the crowd and they intend to stay longer with themselves and consequently, prefer to be alone... Extroverts have spent more time with the crowd than with themselves and thus, would prefer to be in a crowd rather than be alone. Nothing so special... If an introvert should start hanging out more times with the crowd, they would simply become extroverts overtime... Not without consequences, though... Same goes with extroverts... So, the more one watches TV, the more they would want to watch TV... But, here's the big deal... Too much of anything dampens productivity even though it might kindle creativity...
Because watching Television and other audio-visual devices presents a finished product to the brain, the tendency of one to be creative reduces overtime. Not all the time, though... For example, watching comedy is seen to be beneficial since it triggers laughter which in turn triggers the release of endorphins... Which particularly reduces the tendency to feel pain... Warning! Too much of it would make you sarcastic — which could be a good thing... Watching real time actors on TV act, increases one's chances of becoming good in acting — No offense, but I don't mean watching Nollywood. And watching useless shows just calls for not-so-intelligent discussions... For example, "keeping up with the Kerdashians" (I really don't know if that's the proper spelling, but what I'm talking about does sound like that), or celebrity gossips, and of course, Big Brother show(s)... Ask yourself, why would I ever want to keep up with the Kerdashians and what's my business if their father is a woman that has a schwanz? Why should it be my business whether this celebrity is dating this one or the other? What's my business if Tonto Dike got divorced or Chris Brown and Lil Wayne got a new tattoo? Why should I care if Justin Bieber smokes weed? And what is my bloody business if a bunch of morally impaired individuals are locked up in a house? Following such events that do not present with any lessons would only make the followers yearn for the next thing to talk about. Basically, it increases cramming skills and dampens creativity. Such individuals are pretty much good at what they are served, rather than what they can produce. Not all of them though, a large percentage of such persons are practically dull - no offense. Some other are very intelligent - or pretty much have a balanced life... The rest are just there... These information are practically useless and should only be used during leisure, not be a major memory in our head, and as such, should be tossed into the brain trash bin once the show's over. If you keep thinking about Gift and Banky W, you're just not thinking... You're wasting your time. Both your productivity and creativity are sinking. Which means you're becoming more of a slave or an ape.
It is no news that the world's most creative men do not watch television. This is because they already have their minds shaped and television itself shapes the mind, there would be a conflict in their head if they followed the audio-visual devices (because you can't control what you see and hear), surely, their head already is an audio-visual device. In education, one should take caution on how to raise a child. Using of videos too much in teaching children would only make them better crammers than increase their creativity... But that's what parents want, right? Ya, but that's bad... Really bad. Does it mean we should not use videos to learn or watch TVs?
Well, do you want to be so depressed from being overbored by your habits and then see life as one hell of a useless thing? Or do you have all the time and energy in the world to read all the texts in the world? No! So, it's pretty much okay to have a balanced life... Watch TV, read... Socialize and also have time for personal recollection... Do not be too attached to TV and overwhelmed by today's events... Not all of it is worth it... Only the real ones actually make history and those are the life changing ones that should be in your brain and every other not so important ones just be used to just entertainment the brain and should be tossed into the brain trash bin... If it has a tendency to determine how you behave or increases the chances of throwing you into a gossip, like Big Brother Naija, don't watch it...
